As the book goes on, the storyline gets more and more interesting. There are more points of rising action that lead to the climax of the book. For example, on page 155, when this girl named Beth and Macie are fighting about Leslie Gatlin's death, "I stood up and wiped my nose with the back of my hand. 'You two will never get away with this,' I said softly. Macie laughed. 'Oh dear, sweet Beth. We already have.'" At this point in the book some people are starting to suspect who may have influenced Leslie's suicide. In this situation, Beth is accusing Macie and her friend of not directly killing Leslie, but bullying her to an extreme level that it would make Leslie feel very depressed. Beth knows that Macie;s intentions were to kill Leslie, but I don't think that Macie will never admit to that because her character is someone who is very controlling and always makes sure that everything is her way. This book is becoming better and better as I keep reading. It's all about rumors, secrets and lies which adds so much more exciting drama to the story. I hope that the end of the book will live up to my expectations.

My book, Waiting for You, is about high school and friendships as well. My book has friendships breaking and rumors and lies spreading, which create a whole mess between girls as does your book. Your book sounds very good and I would love to read it and compare the similarities it shares to my book, even though I can tell it has several already.

This Japanese graphic novel is really exciting and funny. Alot of the parts got me surprised, up and active or laughing. One of the surprising part is on page 72, when it looked like someone got stabbed, but it was really just a log. There were also parts that are quite exposing, and I like them. I think this book is great with all the things they have drawn on it.

  3. When I started reading the book, I thought that Colin would’ve gotten a girl that was not named Katherine in which those are girls Colin only loves to date. Colin seems so into girls, that he’s not interested into anything else. On pg.1 of the book, Colin recently broke up with a girl named Katherine that had nothing in common with Colin. I wonder why Colin only wants girls named Katherine? This book has made a bit of an impact on me by how Colin is into getting a girlfriends. It has been nineteen Katherines and counting for Colin and I wonder what will happen next. This book makes me wonder about girls having troubles with guys.

When I started reading the book I thought the book Insurgent was every serious and had some action. the characters are heading to a safe house out side the city. the characters face "the gate that is currently shut locking us in.'' (pg 2) I think they are going to make it out of the city.I think they are going to be safe at the safe house for a little while. Tris is the protagonist. the store is told in the first person by Tris.

    Watchmen
    Written by Allen Moore
The book is very good, it really captures city life in New York city in the old days with the twist of there being super heroes. The story follows a verity of the masked heroes of 1974. Including Rorschach, Nite owl, and dr. Manhattan. This story has themes of poverty, gangs, rage, and insanity lots and lots of insanity. The side stories tells me little side stories about the main characters. it's a pretty cool book and it one of the greatest books out there so go get one.

    1. This book seems to have a reality side to it as you said it has many different themes. I have always seemed to find books that go too extreme about NYC, or don't do it justice. I also like that there is a "kids" side to the book as it adds the fantasy of super heroes. Maybe one of the main characters will turn out to be a hero on their own.

    American Sniper
    By Chris Kyle

American Sniper is an autobiography about a sniper named Chris Kyle. The beginning of this book i think is really interesting. It talks about Chris Kyle dream of becoming a cowboy, which i wasn’t expecting i thought it was going to go rite into Chris Kyle navy adventures. I was even more shocked that Chris wasn’t accepted into the navy at first. “The only problem was that i didn’t even get a chance to fail. The Nazy disqualified me when my physical revealed that i had pins in my arm from the rodeo accident.”(pg. 20) I think its amazing that Chris still got into the navy after they said no to him at first. Chris also foreshadowed that the navy would call back when he says, “...there was no way that i was going to fail.”(pg 20) This showed me that Chris wasn’t going to give up and that he would become a Navy Seal.

    1. In my book, as well, I was surprised that the author didn't go right into Louie Zamperini's adventures of World War Two. She took time to introduce his background and where he came from. He started out as a misfit, breaking rules and such, but he eventually turned his life around. I would like to compare Chris Kyle's story with Louie's since they are both stories of American veterans. It would be interesting to compare Chris' experience of war in modern times and Louie's in the forties.

    Blood of Olympus
    By Rick Riordan
    Chapters 1-44

This book is about the existence of the ancient Greek gods in present day. The book follows seven demigods (half god, half mortal) trying to save the world from the Earth goddess, Gaea. In order for the goddess to wake, blood of a male and female demigods must be spilled during a ritual. Since this is the fifth book in the series, all the books have lead up to this, so the book gets pretty exciting. The book is nearly over and Annabeth, a main demigod, has already been cut over the ritual site. “As Annabeth rolled away, her blood soaked into the earth” (Riordan 415). With only 150 pages left, I’m curious how all of this will conclude since there have been a total of 10 books in this timeline. I’m not looking forward to the end because it has been suggested that main character, Leo, will probably die. Nevertheless, I can’t stop reading this book.

    The Raft
    by S.A. Bodeen
    1-4

The Raft is a novel about a girl named Robbie. The beginning of the book I think is very interesting. It talks about Robbie, the main character, and where she lives and what her parents occupation is. She and her parents live on some island called Midway. I don't like how the book doesn't go into detail about the island or her parents. Another thing I don't like about it is that the main character Robbie goes on and on pages and pages about birds. “ I hate these stupid birds on this island i wish they all died” (pg 15). That is a literary element because it is personal conflict vs. nature. As I read on the story is starting to get better.

    Secrets

    By: Jane A. Adams

As starting this book the reader comes across two sides that seem to need to be connected to each other in one way or another. An unidentified man walks into the home of someone he knows and commits suicide right in front of them, this person is Molly Chambers. Molly is suspected to know the man who committed suicide as she heard to mutter “oh, it’s you.” through the phone with the police dispatcher(p.2). As starting the next chapter it brings the reader into a new mystery as it unfold to be a kidnaping in a completely different area.(p.9-10) bouncing back and forth between the unidentified suicide and the unexplained kidnapping the old lady Molly Chambers is having tough times explaining what really went on the day the suicide was committed in her home.(p.13-15) These conflicts seem as though they will lead to something deeper than what it seems. Many literary elements are shown such as irony, imagery, and characterization, but the most occurring one so far is irony because it even starts with an old woman being fearless in the sight of a man pointing a gun at her and then turning it to himself and pulling the trigger. (p.1-4) As more characters are revealed and clues start to drop I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

  10. Clockwork Angel
    By: Cassandra Clare
    Pages: 98-136

When Tessa Gray leaves New York forever, to finally live with her brother in England, she does not expect to get kidnapped. Her whole life changed when she got off that boat in London. The setting is London, England during the reign of Queen Victoria. Before London, Tessa was normal girl. When she arrived in London, she was kidnapped by the Dark Sisters who told her if she wanted her brother to live, she had to listen to them and learn how to use a power she never knew she had. She was taught about the Shadow World. The Shadow World is filled with Warlocks, Werewolves, Vampires, Demons, and most importantly the demon hunters called Shadow Hunters. When a Shadow Hunter named Will comes and rescues Tessa from her captors, Tessa realizes that not all those who are part of the Shadow World are as evil as the Dark Sisters. Will introduces her to his adoptive family and his best friend Jem. Tessa meets the Shadow Hunters and learns their rules and strange customs like: “All Shadow Hunters descended from an archangel named Raziel who had given the first of them a volume called the Gray Book, filled with the language of Heaven.” (Clare, 98). Once she learns this, she knows she can ask for their help in finding her brother. This book is all about secrets. Almost all of the characters in the book have a major secret. Jem has his “illness” and Tessa’s brother Nathaniel and his employer, Mr. Mortmain, have an odd arrangement. Jessamine has a strange desire to not be a Shadow Hunter “my dearest wish is to leave the Institute and never speak to a single soul who resides there ever again.”(Clare, 135) and Will has a total lack of self-preservation. All of the characters have different secrets, but they have to put all of them aside and try and save the world before their secrets destroy it.

  11. I have started to read the book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. It follows the life of a WWII veteran who is also an Olympic athlete. I am vastly enjoying it thus far. The author uses many stories and styles to describe the dynamic character, Louie Zamperini. During his younger years of grade school Louie always got into trouble with everyone. He was described in the story as “untamable… as he grew into his uncommonly clever mind” (Hillenbrand pg 6). She also uses the opposite character foil of his brother, Pete, who was handsome, groomed, and polite to everyone, to contrast how menacing Louie was. Although as he got older the dynamic of his character changed as he discovers track and field. The author makes this clear by later using other words with good connotation such as champion, mature, and a fighter to show Louie’s change in his early years.

  12. The Life of Pi
    By Yann Martel
    Chapters 1-12

The majority of the first twelve chapters are about Pi’s childhood growing up around his father’s zoo. He first outlines he majored in zoology which I presume will help him in his future. Pi and his family are not like most people who consider locking up animals in zoos animal cruelty. Ironically they see the zoo’s habitats as a “paradise” which they consider even better than the wild since they don’t face natural predators like they would in the wild. Pi backs up this claim by telling an anecdote about the group of roe deer. He said that one time a group of them escaped through an open gate and were free to live happily in the wild but soon thereafter the deer returned to their zoo habitat. When Pi was eight years old his father decided to teach him the extreme dangers that zoos animals can possess. Despite the countless of lions, tigers, and bears that are inhabited in the zoo, Pi’s father ironically tells him that the most dangerous animal there is is a human. He explains that countless of zoo animals die because visitors feed them inedible things such as broken beer glasses. His father decides to do a live presentation of the danger of zoo animals such as a tiger. He puts a tied goat in the cage with a tiger who had been unfed for 3 days. The tiger then ripped the goat to pieces cementing a lesson in Pi’s brain forever. His mother is disgusted with Pi’s father for showing him this but to that he responded with “Better the goat than him, no?” (Martel 36). This incident as well as the illustration on the cover foreshadows that this will not be Pi’s last encounter with a tiger.

  13. I am reading the lord of the rings the two towers. It is the second book of the series. I like the way the author uses very colorful language. Its worded in an old fashioned way, which makes sense because it was written in a different time period. For example, when Aragorn finds the brooch of Pippins cape he says, “Not idly do the leaves of Lorien fall” The sentence is organized in an atypical manner that we find strange today. It does not interfere with the understanding of the text and is not overly difficult to comprehend. Other than that, it flows quite nicely. Better than I expected it to. Requires a substantial knowledge of the setting and geography of the book to be best comprehended.

  14. The Undisputed Truth
    By: Mike Tyson
    Page 1-96

The first 96 pages of this book have been some of the best and most emotion filled pages that I've ever read in an auto-biography. Mike Tyson's early life has been one of the most interesting things I think I've ever heard. This book shows his hardships not only as a fighter but as he becomes a man. Including his rough childhood riddled with drugs, robbery, and other crimes. This book also shows what it takes to make change and how much it can affect someone's future.(pg.87) "I'd fight anyone anywhere." This sentence really captures the true ferociousness of Mike Tyson in his early days. I truly look forward to reading this book more and watching as mike develops as a character.

  15. One of the things that I’ve noticed about the author’s style is that she is trying to make it feel like you are in the main characters point of view. The way she is trying to make it seem like you are in the main characters point of view is by tell the story of the main character through her own words. The main character in this story is a teenage girl and her name is Ricki. In the beginning of the book you can already see that how she goes with her dad on his bounty hunter jobs and how she feels when she goes on those jobs. On page 4 Patterson helps me understand why Ricki liked bounty hunting so much when she writes, “When I was a little, Mom told me that being a bounty hunter ment Dad was out fighting crime”. When I started reading this book I thought she would still enjoy bounty hunting still but she doesn’t as much when she was younger.

Did you hear what happened to Andrea?
    By: Gloria D. Miklowitz
    Pages 7-97

This book starts off about a normal 15 year old teenage girls life with her average family. Right in the beginning it already has foreshadowing on page 7: “Then how are you getting there and back? Not hitchhiking, I hope!” said her mother. But Andrea and her boyfriend had “no choice”. After Andrea and her boyfriend missed the bus after a day at the beach together, David(boyfriend) knew he was going to be late for work so they had to hitchhike to get back in time. After the man driving them dropped David off, it was just the man and Andrea. He drove her to an empty lot and that is when her life was flipped upside down. She was rapped. After the incident the man kept saying “I’m sorry. I don’t know why I do it. I’ve got a wife, two kids. I’m sorry, really. I’m sorry…”(page 26). To me that is the most disgusting thing to read. He is so messed up in the head he rapes a teenage girl and has the nerve to say sorry and he rapes her while knowing he has a family. After the rape each character is feeling a different emotion: her Mother is ashamed, her Father is angry and wants revenge, David feels guilty and Andrea feels every emotion. Yet no one understands or wants to understand how Andrea feels. This is book is different from other books I have read before but that is what I like about it. I’m excited to see what else happens.

    1. My book, Clockwork Angel is sort of similar, the main character has this amazing power and everyone just sees one side of it, how cool it is. No one really tries to understand how she feels to be so different, and this makes her feel very alone. Although our books are about two very different topics they seem to have quite a few similarities. I think its cool that my book has magic in it and is set in a different time period than yours, but they still have similarities.

I am reading the book Second Impact by David Klass and Perri Klass. So far in the book it’s talking about a teenager named Jerry Downing who say’s “second chance” on page three. When I saw that quote I kept asking myself what does he mean by that ?. Jerry talks about a certain night where he “dranked alot” to me that say’s a kid in high shouldn’t be drinking so much at a young age. Jerry Downing also talks about how people used to look up to him, and now because of his big mistake not a lot of people like him so much anymore. One night Jerry goes to a party and sees the girl from “the night” and is speechless. When I was reading that part I was thinking to myself go up and have a talk with her and tell her how bad you feel from “the night”. So far the book dosen’t really seem very interesting but I’m sure it will get better.

  19. Looking For Alaska
    By: John Green
    Pages: 1-137
Looking For Alaska takes place at Culver Creek Boarding school in Alabama. At Culver Creek Boarding School, every important event takes place there. This includes meeting all of the primary characters: Miles Halter, 'The' Colonel, and Alaska. Within these pages, the author, John Green, impeccably characterizes the cast having each character bring their own individuality. Thus far, the book has not reached a point of intense conflict, but meeting the characters has been entertaining. Miles Halter, the narrator, is a teenage boy who wisely spends his time reading biographies instead of socializing with others, only to find out what their last words were. Miles explains his love by saying, "But a lot of people die how they live. And so last words tell me a lot about who people were, and why they became the sort of people biographies get written about." (Green 128). As Miles meets The Colonel, his roommate, Colonel instantaneously grants him a name that is purely ironic. In the first few chapters, Miles Halter is described as a lanky, scrawny boy who stands at 6' 0". Although he is described as an awkwardly skinny teenager, the Colonel calls him, ¨Pudge¨. One thing I've noticed about the author's style is that John Green loves to carefully pick characters who are fascinatingly unique and carry a background. John Green delivers wit and humor to the novel by introducing sarcastic and intelligent characters. And by doing so, it allows me to get a full insight on the characters personalities arousing my curiosity to read further.

    Al Silverman
    Pages 1- 28
My book "It's not over till its over" by AL Silverman is about the great sports games in the history of sports. The first chapter is about one of the greatest upsets in the history of baseball. This chapter really grabs your attention if you like any sport. It's about the historical game between the New York Giants and the Chicago Cubs during the 1908 season. The game was played at the Polo grounds and defined baseball forever. The story is about the Giants and how even though they lost the finals to the Cubs and the Cubs got to advance to the world series that the Giants made history. They had a young player named Frederick Merkle. This season was his first season in the big leagues. He had high expectations and in the regular season he exceeded them. When it got to the playoff he went into a slump. He was making mistakes that cost the Giants the chance to play in the world series. Going into the playoff they Giants had extremely high expectations. When Freddy Merkle was put into pinch hit in the game that many thought would finish the series he had a shot into right field. He got on base and advanced a runner to home that's when the crowd rushed the field and chased after the players. Merkle didn't touch second base and they called him out and the run didn't count. The Giants had lost and it was all because of the rookie didn't touch a base which is the most important thing to do. Even though he messed up Merkle went on and had a successful 16 year career and won 4 world series in a row with the Giants. That game even though it was a huge upset defined the way baseball was viewed for ever.

As the book progresses, the story becomes more suspenseful. An example would be on page 44 when Doctor Houston tells Billy Halleck that a possibility for his significant weight loss is because of cancer. For several pages, Billy forgets about the weight and worries about dying from cancer. However, on page 55, Billy is reassured by Doctor Houston that “everything looks fine”, and that the test results say that Billy doesn’t have cancer. He also tells Billy that his weight loss will slow down eventually, then stop, and then he will be gaining his weight back. At first, everything seems to be going fine. The weight loss begins to slow down, but then it speeds up unexpectedly. Billy theorizes that the reason that he is losing weight is because the Gypsy leader that was passing by touched Billy. To confirm the theory, Billy decides to go talk to his friend, Cary Rossington. He discovers that he left for the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for supposed skin cancer treatment. They talk over a few drinks about Cary’s condition. On page 90, Leda tells Billy that the Gypsy also touched Cary, but Leda knows that it’s not skin cancer. Ever since the Gypsy leader touched Cary, Leda explains how his skin has been “turning into scales”, and how “He has become a case of reverse evolution, a sideshow freak. He’s turning into a fish or a reptile”.

  23. The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B
    By: Teresa Toten
    Pages: 1-111
The book, The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B, is about a boy named Adam living with severe OCD. This book does a wonderful job of describing the stress, degradation, and embarrassment that comes with obsessive compulsive disorder. Toten uses descriptive language to help portray an obsessive compulsive person: “I believe that I am unclean and will harm those I care about the most and that there is too much noise in my head and that I am so goddamned tired..” This book is very intriguing and hard to put down. When I do put it down, it feels like my head is stuck in the book. I still can feel all the emotions Adam is feeling and I can’t stop thinking about what he’s going through. I’m always impressed when an adult accurately portrays what it is like to be a teenager. It seems like most adults forget what it is like to be younger. Toten does a great job showing how difficult it is for people with mental health issues to deal with normal situations. Not only do they have to deal with their own obstacles, but they also have normal problems as well. I am very happy I found this book and would definitely recommend it so far.

Oceania is a surveillance state run by members of the English Socialism (or Ingsoc) party. There are no longer any explicit laws, only the thought police. The party manipulates information to their will, claiming falsehoods to be true, such as their invention of the airplane. Even going so far as to invent the language of Newspeak with deliberate linguistic conventions that make heretical thought nigh impossible.
Throughout a there is repetition of the party's mottoes, which reinforce its hostility.

Daelyn is not supposed to have friends because she is different she thinks but this boy will not leave her alone. Her conflict is that she doesn’t have friends and doesn’t fit in. One quote I found is when her mother said, ‘’I told you not to talk to strangers, especially boys. He looks dangerous to me.” This quote is important because her mom doesn’t like her to have friends because of her “condition”.

  26. When I first started reading the chapter about Bevo Francis in my book, I didn’t know what to think. Some of the things that he has done on the basketball court are just unbelievable. For example, on page 8 the book states that Bevo averaged 46.5 points per game as a sophomore in college and 50.1 points per game as a freshman! I’ve watched a lot of college basketball and I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone average even 25 points per game. What really shocks me though is that I never even heard of him before I read this book. If NBA players who don’t even come close to averaging even 40 points per game, how is it possible that I haven’t even heard of a COLLEGE player who averaged 50.1 points per game as a Freshman? The most surprising thing I learned though is that he disappeared from basketball almost as quick as he appeared which leads me to wonder, just who is Bevo Francis really?

    Blood of Olympus
    By Rick Riordan
    Chapters 44-58

In these final few chapters, a lot has happened which is to be expected since there were so many stories within this book to end. All along I knew that Leo would never die. Throughout the book, he had been discussing his secret plan with numerous gods, foreshadowing that Leo was trying to find a way to cheat the prophecy and have no one die. The reader is actually left to guess for themselves until the final chapter of the book when, “He gasped and sat up. The first thing he felt was the wind in his face, then the searing pain on his right arm”(Riordan 509). This is after Leo died by destroying the Earth goddess in basically a supernova of fire, but revives himself with the physician’s cure. In the end, I knew that everything would have a nice happy ending because that’s how a series of books should finish.

    2. I do agree with your statement that these types of books should typically have a happy ending. With that said I think fantasy authors can sometimes get caught up in their writing making the story too far fetched. My book, Life of Pi is an example of the point I just made. It is about a young man of somehow survives a shipwreck for 227 on on lifeboat with just a 450 pound Bengal tiger. I am not saying that having a young boy being torn to pieces would be a better ending, although… no that would terrible. I am not usually a fan of fantasy novels for this reason. Sometimes the book is too unbelievable that I challenge the veracity of the authors writing. I have seen the first movie of this series and look forward to either seeing movies or reading the rest of the book.

    4. Our books are very similar in the sense that there is a group or company of elites sent out to complete a difficult mission. In my novel, they are scattered but in yours they are still together for the most part. Both are told from varying viewpoints. Your point that all series should end with a happy ending is debatable. Everything does not necessarily resolve itself. A character may die for instance.

  28. Clockwork Angel

    By: Cassandra Clare

    pages: 400-476

When I started reading this book I didn't know what to expect because it took place so long ago, I thought it would be a little boring. As I read more of the book I realized I was completely wrong. Toward the end a little bit of everyone's secrets come out. For example, Nathaniel, (Tessa’s brother) tells so many lies and has so many secrets that it is hard to tell what is actually true. He has lied almost his whole life. Tessa and her Aunt thought of him as a little boy who was foolish and needed protection from the world, they thought he didn't noticed how they treated him. After he moved to London to work for Mr. Mortmain he sent back a gift for his Aunt, it was poison chocolate that killed her. This is not the only wrong and deceitful thing he has done, but there are still more layers to his lies to fnd out. Another secret that unfolds is Jessamine’s secret. During the whole book she adamantly refuses to be a shadowhunter but when the time comes to fight, as the Institute is almost over run, she doesn't seem so adamant anymore. Another secret has also just been discovered, Tessa always wears a necklace of what she calls a “clockwork angel” it is an angel pendant on a chain, but the angel ticks like a clock. When Tessa is being restrained by one of Mr. Mortmains automans her angel comes to life and with its wings hacks away at the auto man's head and Tessa is released. “ ...and saw to her amazement that the little metal angel had emerged from beneath the collar of her dress… the angel dived like a hornet, slashing with the edges of its wings at the head of the creature holding her.” (Clare, 405). One literary element that was throughout most of the book was conflict, not only because as shadowhunters they have to fight all the time, but also between Will and Tessa. They seemed to both like eachother but when Tessa tries to talk to him about it, he says something so unimaginably rude its hard to believe, but yet something still doesn't seem right. This is yet another secret that hasn’t unfolded.

Did you hear what happened to Andrea?

    By: Gloria D. Miklowitz

    Pages: 98-168

The book’s title is what made me want to read this book. The title has a question in it so of course I had to find out the answer. The question is did you hear what happened to Andrea? I found out she was raped and she had to overcome many obstacles and challenges throughout the book. “Rae says that’s how it is, that what happened leaves a scar. If you pick at it, it begins to ooze again. Let it heal. And it will, slowly…” page 168. Andrea did slowly recover and overcome her challenges. One literary element used in this book a lot is conflict. With Andrea there always seemed to be a conflict either with her mom, sister, boyfriend, friends or herself. The conflicts were of course understandable because she had been through so much and no one could fully understand what she was going through. After the rape she was broken and she slowly picked up the pieces, one by one. This book is realistic because it is about a young teenage girl that had been raped. In the United States, every 9 minutes someone gets raped. The police did find the man who raped Andrea, Andrea pressed charges and the man is getting 5 years to life in jail. “The chain that linked me to him all this time is cut at last, though I suspect I’ll always drag an end.” page 168. That quote is my favorite quote because it is so powerful and it summarizes the book in only one sentence. Being a teenager and going through so much at a young age, I could only imagine how hard that must be.

  30. The Life of Pi
    By Yann Martel
    Chapters 12-End

In the beginning I thought there was no possibility of Pi living when Pi’s boat sank and was forced to share a small boat with himself and 450 pound bengal tiger. However Pi somehow managed to survive 227 days at sea with a man eating beast until he found land in a Mexican town. I was only partially shocked at this ending despite the far-fetched events because books like these typically don’t have sad endings. Although this book and The Kite Runner have different plots, I found that the makeup of them are strongly comparative. In both novels the inciting incident and the climax were very intriguing but the rest of the book was dull. I am looking into watching the movie version to see what the movie kept and decided to throw out. Like I said in my first post this book is filled with irony. Pi’s first plan was to let the tiger starve but soon saw the flaws in this plan. He then decided that the only way he was going to survive was to not hide from the tiger but rather to show companionship towards it. After the majority of a year at sea, Pi wasn’t overjoyed by his landing in Mexico. He was happy that he had finally returned home but was not pleased at what the tiger did when the boat came ashore. As soon as they came onto the land the tiger immediately left to live his life in the forest. “I wept like a child” (Martel 285). He explains that the reasons for his tears war not because he had overcome his life threatening event but rather because “Richard Parker had left me so unceremoniously” (Martel 285). Pi’s reaction to the departure of a tiger who was once a threat to his life shows that friendships are possible even after the greatest of differences.

    1. Like you, I was also only partially shocked that the book ended in a happy ending. In Blood of Olympus, I was supposed to be unsure of Leo's survival, but I knew that he couldn't die. In your book, it would be pretty dull if Pi survived the ship sinking only to die. I've seen the movie, but I might read the book just to spot the differences.

    2. As in your book, my character faced enormous, impossible odds as to find a way to survive in the end. However, they are both two very different stories in themselves. I would like to read your book, Life of Pi, as well just to compare the stories and the hardships that both characters faced.

    3. Ive seen the movie Life of Pi but have not read the book. I wonder if the book is much more dense. I agree that its plot structure is similar to Kite Runners in that it peaks early and builds up towards the end. However I believe the final climax of Life of Pi is less dramatic than the fight seen between Hassan and Assef. Your book is somewhat similar to mine in that the two protagonists are forced to cooperate with dangerous creatures. However in Life of PI, Pi admires the tiger where Frodo is not as in awe of smeagol. He does not seek an equal friendship. The odds are stacked against the protagonists in both cases.

  32. Looking For Alaska
    By: John Green
    Pages: 138-248

Looking for Alaska is divided into two segments: Before and After. Prior to reading the book, I didn’t realize why the book was divided. Advancing into the novel, a revelation had occurred to me that in between those pages would contain the climax. During those chapters, the main character, Alaska was killed in a car accident. Although Miles and The Colonel felt the inevitable pain of her passing, a couple months later they wanted to figure out how it happened as the accident was very impromptu. An epiphany had arisen, when both, Miles and The Colonel figured out it was suicide. After the tragic event, I realized that there were numerous amount of times foreshadowing took place. For instance, Alaska plays around the topic of death various times throughout the novel. During a brief moment where Alaska, Miles, and The Colonel are smoking, Alaska says, “Y'all smoke to enjoy it. I smoke to die” (Green 44). Foreshadowing is not a major part of the book, but John Green purposely does this because most events in life are spontaneous. However, Alaska once told Miles in terms of secrecy: “What you must understand about me is that I’m a deeply unhappy person” (Green 123). The book revolves around death itself and the fact that Miles Halter memorizes and recites people's last words is a way of foreshadowing upcoming events having to do with death. I have also realized the title was fascinatingly chosen foreshadowing the entire novel because it lets the reader know that there will be a search of Alaska of somesort. Overall, I was greatly fond of this book and did not detect the climax beforehand. Her passing occurred mysteriously, relating to how life can be so mysterious itself.

    Unbroken

    p94-404

I have read the rest of my book, and it was just phenomenal. More and more things happened in the life of Louie Zamperini that I could hardly imagine going through. These events as they played out brought to life a theme of tenacity and persistence. Louie, on his journey, did not ever give up. He was stranded on a raft with two friends and survived even when one of his companions passed away. He went to an execution camp and came out alive. He was sent to multiple Prisoner Of War encampments. At one of which he came to meet the leader of the camp, otherwise known as “the Bird” who once had each P.O.W in the encampment punch him in the face. In other instances the Bird would “beat Louie to unconsciousness” (Hillenbrand p471). Although through all this agony and resistance, Louie had the will to make it out alive and journey back home. This with, many other instances, exemplifies the theme of persistence the author drew out.

    1. My book, Life of Pi, is surprisingly similar to yours. Like your book the main character in mine was stranded in the middle of the ocean on a small boat. In your book he shared a raft with two other men while in mine Pi shared a boat with a large Bengal tiger. Both of them had to show great persistence in the toughest of times. At one point in my book Pi found pleasure in the fact the tiger would soon tear him to pieces. Despite this thought Pi came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to help him survive. Therefore Pi dismissed the thought and persisted through 227 days the boat with the tiger until they found shore in Mexico. I have been told that the movie was phenomenal so I hope I can find the time to read this book.

I finished my book Second Impact. The main character Jerry Downing leads his team to the championship, but unfortunately they lost in overtime. This book was mainly about Jerry Downing trying to have a second for the biggest mistake he made in his life. Carla is a friend of Jerry’s unfortunately she get’s expelled from school because she was taping her principal, but as stated in the book the principal is a bully. Even though Jerry and his team didn’t get to win the state championship I think he did the best he could to redeem himself. I did think it was the right thing to expel Carla for what she did, but to her defense the principal Mr. Bamburger thinks she’s a spoiled rich princess and like I said before he’s a bully. Jerry still regrets losing, but there people who still respect him.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    by: J.R.R. Tolkien
    pages: 453-559

*This is the second book. As a result, it begins on page 403 because that is when the previous book ended. It is numbered differently as a result and can lead to misconceptions about its size

J.R.R Tolkien tells multiple stories at once with this book. It has many important characters all working for the same common goal, but contributing in different ways and struggling against different problems in different settings. For example, Frodo is carrying the ring to mordor for the ultimate destruction of Sauron; Merry and Pippin want to first free themselves from Uruk Hai captivity, then help the ents sack Isengard: Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli want to find Merry and Pippin, but then need to help Rohan battle against the might of Isengard. This leads to different chapters telling the stories of different characters in different ways. Tolkien also uses this to create suspense. An example of this is when Merry, Pippin, and the ents are going to attack Isengard, the fortress where the evil wizard Saruman dwells, he changes chapter and picks up where Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli left off on their venture leaving the reader wanting to know what happens at Isengard. Do the ents prevail? Or does Saruman and the small company present in Isengard hold their own against sixty or so thirty feet tall wooden giants? It is very interesting so far and things happen very quickly as opposed to the first book which took roughly two hundred pages until much significant action occurs.

The reason why the book gets better towards the because the skip that Ricki and her dad where after his name was Ian and he had gotten away from them by stealing a civilians car. While Ricki and her dad went to go look for her they had to go get another skip. When the two of them found where he was staying he had tricked them at a motel and had stolen the dads truck. After they had taken the other skip to jail Ricki had used a payphone to call the dads work phone to find out where Ian is by Ricki telling him that she wants him to help her find her mom in California. When Ian had told her that he was at his sisters house Ricki had told her dad where he was. When they got to the sisters house while the dad was in the house looking for him Ian went to the rental truck Ian had driven the truck away and started heading to California. Ian and Ricki stopped on the side of the road to rest but the dad found them and then they took Ian to jail. When they were done Ricki called her mom and found out that she was not going to take care of her while she stays with her online boyfriend, and the dad thinks if they both live together they can get a second chance since they didn’t see each other for a long time. Secrets by Jane A. Adams
Asthe novel continues the stolen van is found with two men inside. they been drugged and whoever locked them in the van wanted them dead. they left a carbon dioxide gas running. The gun of the man that committed suicide in Molly's home was also linked to two separate murders. How ever as the chapters continue to change setting and introduce more characters the murders are investigated and links start to form from Molly's past. Molly has had a dark past of secrets which she shared with her husband Edward Chambers. They had many colleagues in which they were all involved in on government case; whatever the case was it led to a file of document that was mean to be rid of. However. Molly still has them. One colleague of the case, Gustav Clay, some how had became an enemy of they rest of the team and now wanted revenge and wanted his hands on the file.Clay is now the antagonist of the story.
Alec and Naomi find themselves unable to stay away from the case because they know that Molly may not want to ask for it, but she needs help. ("Frankly, my love, you are getting very annoying with this effort to be mysterious. One of these days you'll really need someone's help" p.142) This quote came from an old friend, Adam, who also was involved with the file that Molly has in her possession. He is also aware of the many enemies that she may have acquired, and he want to help her because he may be a target as well. Molly continues to play it out strong, she even stays in her own home and receives phone calls from someone. The author makes the characters in the book know who they are talking to , but the reader only knows Molly is speaking on one end. "Look. I'm old. Not Stupid. If you want me dead then I suppose I'd better start on the funeral arrangements, but I'm damned if I'm going to play your games."(p.74) This is dialogue from one of the first mysterious phone calls she received, and she knows who she is speaking to, but the reader merely knows that its is the man who wants revenge, they don't know a name. It is also an ironic statement because instead of being scared she is ready for the antagonist to come for their revenge and she seems to be ready for battle. The mood the author gives some of the scenes in the book are very tense because of all of the secret and hidden phone calls and meetings give the reader a source of suspense because the characters of the book are slowly getting closer to their past friends and enemies and they are ready to "gang up and get rid of" whoever has been messing with what they thought they left behind In their past.

  44. The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B
    By: Teresa Toten
    Pages: 111-272

This book was excellently written. It was so easy to relate to Adam and the others in the support group. As I finished the book, I realized how often the author used foreshadowing to prepare the reader for what would happen next. The members of the support group were told at the beginning of the book to chose a superhero to be their alter-ego. One girl chose Snookie as her superhero. Although Snookie is not really a superhero, the others in the group accepted her choice. The heros the group chose foreshadowed their personalities in the end of the book. By the end, the once shy girl became a strong, confident, independent woman just like snookie. A significant quote in this book is from a story book Adam read with his brother, “A dragon lives forever but not so little boys". This quote is saying that you can’t be a little boy forever because you have to grow both physically and mentally. It represents the book because Adam grew a tremendous amount from the beginning of the book, and is no longer just a scared little boy. This was a wonderful book and nearly impossible to put down, I absolutely recommend it.

The progression of the book is rather lengthy. This can cause for readers to get easily bored. The conclusion to the story is also rather disappointing. After leaving his wife a note, Billy Halleck begins his search for the Gypsies. As he traverses up the East Coast, Halleck makes numerous stops asking locals if they know the whereabouts of his targets. After several weeks, Billy confronts the Gypsies. This is an example of an external conflict with another person. He orders for the curse to be taken off. Taduz Lemke, leader of the Gypsies, refuses, saying that “I never take it off, white man from town” (King 202). After Halleck is evicted from the Gypsy ring, he calls his friend Ginelli. After threatening the Gypsies through several actions, Taduz agrees to take the curse off. Billy and Lemke meet in a park and Lemke puts the curse into a strawberry pie. Lemke informs Billy that the curse must be passed onto someone else. Billy figures Heidi would be an ideal target. When Billy returns home, he tries to get Heidi to eat the pie, but fails to. He goes to sleep, and when he wakes up, he sees that Heidi and Linda both had a piece of pie. When he sees this, he serves himself a piece of pie.

This gave characterization of mike because he began being someone he was not and ended up becoming the person he truly was, Iron Mike Tyson. this development from boy to man was very clear cut as seen on [age 550 where he says “Kiki and I started a charity called mike tyson cares’’. 50. The book I'm reading for quarter 4 is called Tomboy by Liz Prince. It's based on a true story and it teaches teens that they can be who they want to be. In the story Liz is a girl with one problem, she hates dresses and girly stuff. She'll only wear stuff for boys! Liz has been having this problem since she was 3 years old and do things that boys usually do i.e video games, baseball, action figures etc. Liz has also been mistaken for a boy more than once. But when she becomes a teenager things become much more harder for Liz as she slowly matures as a girl. I think that every teenager should read this book because it doesn't matter who you are on the outside, it's the inside that counts. This is a very important topic for me because I want to be involved in the Visibility club next year. I think that a lot of kids struggle with their self-expression because they think that they are supposed to act a certain way. The theme of "Tomboy" is very positive and relatable. I think a lot of kids, even those that may not think that they do, feel pressure to behave and be a certain way. Just knowing that being yourself is enough, is a hard lesson to learn.
